The 3M 39053 Paint Restoration System is all about ease of use and is designed to produce results that can be consistently achieved by just about anyone, regardless of their experience working with automobile finishes. The system consists of the three liquid compounds that are applied in series - first, the 3M Scratch Remover Plus product which removes patches of clear coat oxidation, swirl marks and light scratches; second, the 3M Shine Restorer compound which renews a high-gloss shine; and finally, 3M's Synthetic Wax Protectant compound which protects the newly restored finish. The system also provides for optional initial prep of trouble areas using 3M's Scratch Eraser Pad that allows for additional scratch removal by hand when necessary. Otherwise, application of all three products of the system utilize a user-provided 6-inch random orbital polisher or sander, and color-coded foam pads (included in the system) which attach to polisher/sander's head.

The three products of the 3M Paint Restoration System contain different coarseness of texture which is the basis of the system's 3-step process. The color of the foam pads used match the colors indicated on each of the product bottles included: yellow for scratch removal, blue for the shine restorer and white for the synthetic wax. This color-coding means that blending of compounds never occurs by ensuring that the correct pad is exclusively used with the correct compound.
